Small postman

Heliconius erato (petiverana)

Description:

My respects went to this small postman butterfly since it seems to have survived several attacks by birds as her wings show with the multiple bites that took parts of them. Its survival most likely has to do with it being unpalatable to birds. Several species of butterfly are not tasty and moreover, even toxic to birds. Adults can also last for several months because of their ability to collect and digest pollen a part from nectar. There is great variabilty in colors and shapes for this species.

Habitat:

Central and north part of South Americal (tropical areas). Garden in Tuetal de Alajuela, Costa Rica.
