Fomes hemitephrus
This bracket fungus was about 60 mm wide with an acute edge. The fertile surface was white under which pores were visible on an orange surface ( Pics 5 & 6). A small bracket was seen emerging beside the mature bracket. It was totally white with a flat underside (Pic 3).
Spotted on a damp log in a nature reserve.
These are said to be a common bracket fungus, a chief cause for heart rot in living or dead trees. On live trees, they are mostly seen on Myrtle Beech.
