Description:

About 1/4 to 5/16ths inch long body.

Habitat:

On center of Black-eyed Susan in prairie.

Notes:

Spotted on Oronoco Prairie Scientific and Natural Area. One reference on bugguide suggested Nemognatha piazata. http://bugguide.net/node/view/464298/bgi... However, best match of appearance and description of my spotting found in Insects of the North Woods by Jeffrey Hahn.

Incidently, I photographed probably this same species at Minneopa State Park, not far from where you photographed yours. See mine at http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/632.... Very cool insects....

This is, I believe, one of the blister beetles, Blister Beetle in the family Nemognathinae. You may want to take a look at http://bugguide.net/node/view/362119/bgp... and start at this page to see if you can narrow the ID down somewhat.
