Smooth Wild Rose

Rosa blanda

The smooth rose grows erect 1 to 3 feet high, with little branching and mostly without thorns. It has white to pink flowers with 5 petals. In the center are numerous stamens with white and yellow anthers surrounding a short, but wide column of yellow to orange petals. Leaves are pinnate with 5 to 9 oblong leaflets and course teeth.

The smooth rose is found in forest openings and along roads. They prefer full sun in meadows, prairies and along dry hillsides.

A number of smooth rose plants can be found along the roadside near Pine Lake on Hwy 29.
