Cabbage Palmetto

Sabal palmetto

Habitat:

Found growing on the bank of the Econfina River. In the tidal zone at low tide.

Notes:

Where the saltmarsh, along the Gulf of Mexico, meets the hardwood forest there is a zone where these palms grow abundantly. As the sea level rises they are dying off as they can only tolerate limited amounts of salt water. You can look out across the salt marsh and see a forest of dead palm trunks.
