Margined Carrion Beetle

Oiceoptoma noveboracense

Description:

I found this beetle at a cherry orchard in an area where two young kids walked over and said "Eew! It smells like rotten bodies!" This was quite the observation, as it makes sense I found this Oiceoptoma noveboracense, a Margined Carrion Beetle in this area. I think the rotten smell was due to the mass emergence of the 17-year Cicadas (Magicicada sp., mostly M. septendecim and M. cassini). There were many which had died around this area. They were still flying here though!

Habitat:

Found in an area where "It smells like rotten bodies!" was the first reaction by two young children.

Notes:

Lifer!
