Monarch larva

Danaus plexippus

Description:

These are second instar Monarch butterfly larva (caterpillars). They are each about 6mm to 7mm in length with the typical yellow, black, and white banding pattern.

Habitat:

These caterpillars were found on the milkweed plants that grow around my front windows. They were sheltering among the flowers at the tops of the plants (and under the leaf in one case) to avoid the rain.
