Red-bellied Woodpecker

Melanerpes carolinus

Description:

The belly is mostly gray, the back is black and white striped, and the head is gray with a large red patch from the base of the neck around to the forehead on the male, and the female is the same except with red only on the back of the head. Both parents were coming to feed the babies.

Habitat:

I found this woodpecker nest in a dead tree over a small pond in an oak forest. Sadly the babies never stuck their heads out for me to get pictures.
