Larus glaucescens
Large white-headed gull, usually found close to the sea. Strong yellow beak with red spot on lower mandible. Pale grey mantle and no dark tips on wings or tail.Pale pink legs.
This is the most common gull along the westcoast of BC and if you see a gull that has no black wing tips here you are probably looking at a Glaucous-winged Gull! Photos taken at White Rock beach at low tide. Lots of warm shallow pools with small fish trapped in them. Great fishing for an opportunistic feeder like this gull.
I took about 50 pics of this gull fishing and eating. Amazing the way it would toss the little fish up and then catch it crosswise or lengthwise in its beak, douse it in some more water, shake it and then try to down it again. After getting it down whole, he seemed to take a few drinks of water, but this was salt water so I don't think so. Will have to think on that one!

Thanks, Telse! Yes, White Rock is so special and it was perfect timing with the tide out about as far as it ever gets. Wonderful!
Really nice capture Kathleen. I particularly love image 3 with the reflection on the breast. Very nice photo.
