Description:

Rocky Mountain Elk spotted on the summit of Elk Mountain, in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, Oklahoma.

Notes:

Elk had been exterminated from the Wichita Mountains by 1875. Since their reintroduction in 1908, the herd has thrived—today numbering approximately 800 animals.

Many thanks for the SOTD. This one was extra fun because it was a large bull elk sitting atop the summit of "Elk Mountain".
