Giant Pacific Octopus

Description:

Young Giant Pacific Octopus captured in a crab trap while dining on crabs. The eye of the octopus is concentrating on a crab that is in the lower left of the picture.The octopus length is approximately 6 feet from mantel to tip of tentacles. Adults generally attain a length of about 23 feet.

Habitat:

This octopus lives in the coastal waters within the protected tribal waters of the Annette Island Reserve. The Reserve is a part of the Metlakatla Indian Community, the only Indian Reservation in the state of Alaska.

Notes:

The octopus was returned to waters of the protected reserve.
