Mockernut Hickory

Carya tomentosa

Description:

This small series shows the growth of a young Mockernut Hickory over a period of only four days. Fewer than 24 hours separate the first and second photos ... the bud exploded overnight, I think it must have happened with a sudden "pop" ... wish I had seen that moment.

Habitat:

Suburban yard .. "volunteer" tree.

Notes:

Probably the most common hickory in the Southeast U.S., Mockernut is also called White Hickory and Whiteheart Hickory. Also designated Carya alba ... don't know why the two scientific names.

Nice shot and info Suzanne. I had never heard of the synonym Carya alba until now. :-)
