Changeable Hawk-Eagle

Nisaetus cirrhatus

Description:

This was right in front of our jeep: I'd seen one before in Singapore but nothing prepared me for the majesty of this raptor.

Thanks, I think I'll stick with a Changeable Hawk-Eagle.

I did some more checking and some Changeable Hawk-Eagles do indeed have tails like that, but the colour is usually like the second picture, possibly the first one the camera white balance got confused, it often happens! Mountain Hawk-Eagle is another which is close to this. Atul knows these a lot better than me.

Has anyone got any other suggestions on possible raptors this could be?

Yes, I'm almost certain because we saw Crested Serpent Eagles (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/307...) on the trip to and this one looks nothing like it. Our guide identified it as a Changeable Hawk Eagle, and he's been going to Kabini for a very long time.

Are you sure its not a Crested Serpent Eagle? It only has one thick dark band by the tail tip and one thinner band further up the tail, Changeable Hawk Eagle has 4 thinner bands on the tail and also both forms are blacker or greyer on the wings than yours.
