Common Five-ring

Ypthima stellera stellera

Description:

Nymphalidae; Satyrinae; Ypthima stellera stellera Eschscholtz, 1821. This butterfly is endemic to the Philippines - https://discoveryjournals.org/Species/cu...... Thie one in my photos is an example with small rings on the under side of the rear wings

Habitat:

This butterfly was spotted in our backyard, resting on the leaf litter under a clump of Spiny Bamboo (Bambusa bambos) locally known as Kauayan-tinik. Plant information from http://www.stuartxchange.org/Kauayan.htm...... The colouring of this butterfly blends very well with this kind of leaf litter, in the dry season. It seems to be a perfect place to rest, making it quite difficult to see from a short distance away. I almost walked into this one.

Notes:

If there is anyone who doesn't know which rings are counted (for the Common Five-ring and the Common Three-ring), please look at https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/84..........
