Black-legged Kittiwake (chick and adults)

Rissa tridactyla

Description:

In Europe this bird is the only member of the genus Rissa. It is often known just as Kittiwake. These birds breed in large colonies on cliffs, and the noise of screaming gulls coming from the colonies is quite extraordinary. They resemble herring and common gulls but can easily be recognized by their black legs and feet.

Habitat:

Coastal clifl ledges, at Ingólfshöfði.

Notes:

Check out the nests: these are made on horizontal ledges by cementing grass and seaweeds to the rocks with saliva .
