Robertson's blue

Lepidochrysops robertsoni

Description:

Dark upper side and a fairly slow wandering flight. The males exhibit hill topping behavior where they are extremely territorial, circling around and chasing other butterflies.

Habitat:

Mountains, hill tops, hillsides.

Notes:

The third instar larva of these butterflies emits chemicals which mimics the brood pheromone of Camponotus niveosetus ants. The ants will then carry the larva into their nests where it prays on the ant brood. The pupa forms inside the nest and once the adult emerges it crawls through the tunnels, wings unexpanded, until it finds an opening to the outside.
