Pale Violet

Viola striata

Description:

These are the cleistogamous(closed-marriage) flowers of this species, they are produced later in the season when the days get longer. Most plants with this type of flower also produce chasmogamous(open-marriage) flowers. The closed flowers help to ensure reproduction, under less than favorable conditions, with less expenditure on the plants part, but at the cost of opportunity for genetic evolution.
