Killdeer (On Nest)

Charadrius vociferus

Description:

They have a brown back, white neck ring, two black bands across a white breast and a long tail with an orange rump that shows only in flight or display. The adults measure 10-1/2 inches in length with a wingspan of 24 inches.

Habitat:

Woodland / Marsh Trail

Notes:

Killdeer have a unique method for protecting their eggs and young. If a predator or threat approaches, one of the adults will perform a “broken-wing” act by dragging one of its wings as it walks away from the nest or young. The tactic makes intruders or threats think the bird is struggling so they turn their attention to the adult rather than the nest or babies.
