Nuttall's Woodpecker

Picoides nuttallii

Description:

California woodpecker. Black and white barred and spotted. Males have a red patch from center crown to top of nape. Black back and wings with white barring. Underside is white with spotted flanks. Black tail feathers with white outer feathers.

Habitat:

Mainly found in Oak forests but this was spotted on conifers and other mixed trees.

Notes:

This pair was spotted in Newhall park with a Downy Woodpecker.
