Hypolimnas misippus
The Danaid Eggfly, Mimic, or Diadem (Hypolimnas misippus) is a widespread species of nymphalid butterfly. It is well known for polymorphism and mimicry. Males are blackish with distinctive white spots that are fringed in blue. Females are in multiple forms that include male like forms while others appear like the toxic Danaus chrysippus and Danaus plexippus butterfles. They are found across Africa, Asia, and Australia.
It was during a walk along a hedge it was discovered. It had been resting but flew off at the sudden intrusion. It returned to another spot and on landing, it quickly disappeared blending with the foliage on the flanks. It was difficult to locate in this wonderful camouflage (The last photo displays a fine attempt to mimic a hanging leaf). It always took off when I got close enough but still unseen by me, or sometimes I passed before it revealed itself by flipping over and flying to another location. The chase continued. The only photo of this Mimic I had from months ago wasn't satisfactory and that was why did not give up on this one easily. The gap was closing and butterfly and I were getting acquainted. When I got to its new location, it would fly off and return to the place and face my direction ( a similar behaviour seen in several other affable nymphalids). It was even liberal enough as to unfurl its wings. I found that very pleasant. It was all mine. I took the best shots and gave it the break it deserved.
