Description:

Red Admiral (Vanessa talanta). A very distinctive colorful butterfly with bold reddish-orange stripes and white spots on brownish-black wings. Found in temperate Europe, Asia and North America. This species resides only in warmer areas. Wing span 1.8-2 inches (45-50 cm). Interesting fact--The Red Admiral is the butterfly featured by Vladimir Nabokov, an amateur lepidopterist, in his novel "Pale Fire".

This lovely Red Admiral was spotted on a dirt path at Kinder Farm Park in Millersville, Maryland
