Arilus cristatus

Description:

Family: Reduviidae. Subfamily:Harpactorinae. Genus: Arilus - Assassin bugs. Length: up to 38 mm. Mating done from the side. Female larger than male. Medium Gray color with cog wheel and long proboscis. Feeds on other insects and spiders. Slow-moving. Non-aggressive. (Has wings but prefers to move slowly through mostly goldenrod, but other plants too)

Notes:

Male is smaller and to the left in first photo. Do not handle because of the danger of a painful bite. Photos were taken near dusk.
