Quite a few off these were flitting about the ford, accompanied by some brilliant red ones, possibly the male of same species?

Hello Matt, species suggestions are usually reserved for making suggestions at the species or genus level. Including a generally common name for a large group of insects, with no addition of any scientific name does not hold much value. It is the equivalent of identifying a plant simply as "tree". Also this species belongs to the suborder generally referred to as "damselflies".
