We have solved the problem. It seems that this one (Smokey) has a variety of wing patterns, one looks very much like an Ebony :)

I would wait. Perhaps you could ask for confirmation from the La Selva Biological Research Center to see if they have records. I found several papers from US universities connected to their research, but no lists of species. Pam - this appears to be an Ebony Jewelwing, Calopteryx maculata, however I cannot find a reference on the web to support it in Costa Rica. This is the best reference which as it in US and in South America. http://www.discoverlife.org/mp/20q?searc...
