Two quick photos were all I had time for before it disappeared into a crevice. Size about 20-30 mm.
Night active, low water in the Indian Ocean. Found in a crevice where the water reaches when it is tide.

Thank you, Tiz! Good luck!
AshleyM! I am very happy you found project noah in general, and this little crab in particular. I find your comments very interesting, even if you have a hard time to ID the little thing.
I wish I had the chanse to take more photos of it, but I have left the area for the spotting. Perhaps this buddy will remain a secret for a bit longer...
Jolly, thank you for your nice comment as well :)
Beautiful little crab.
This crab is giving me a hard time. I'm caught between a guard crab species or a coral crab species, and so far the most similar crab is the Trapezia septata; the pattern on this species is obviously different. It could be a younger form of a coral crab species (due to its small size and separate spotting).
It is very elusive according to your description. New species?
I well deserved un-payed leave Fanie! :)
Darn, I just looked in the mirror and after two hours walk on the beach I have the same colouration on my back !!! Well done Tina!
I guess I am going to be on holiday then for the next few days :-).
Haha Fanie! If you would nail in ID on this one too, I would give you my special Nobel Price! I am Swedish after all :) I think you can relax for a tew days, there will be mostly marine spottings the next coming days :)
Guys, I am happy you liked the crab! I just wish I could have got a few more shots :(
Nice one, but I have no idea on the ID.
Wow. Great spotting!
That is really small. Nice colors.
