Stick Insect, Phasmid - Nymph

Description:

This is a Nymph of Stick Insect from the genus Phobaeticus, possibly Phobaeticus lambirica, in view of the location it was found. 1 Female Specimen of Phobaeticus lambirica was first found in 1995 and subsequently described by a Taxonomist from Singapore in 1998, named P.lambirica in reference to the location it was found. This particular Nymph is around 5 cm in body length but its front legs is just as long as its body! Due to their size and long legs, they are likely to be in the higher canopy of the forest except at Nymph stages. Adults are seldom found. Species that lives in the higher canopy sometimes fall down to the lower level after a thunderstorm or strong winds and sometimes, found by accident on trees/timbers that were chopped down.

Notes:

Stick Insect from the genus Phobaeticus can grow very long and in fact one specie, Phobaeticus chani, from Sarawak, Borneo currently holds the world record as the longest Stick Insect in the world. The specimen deposited at Natural Muzeum of London measured 56.7 cm in total lenght but body length of 35.7 cm.
