Red Shouldered Hawk

Buteo lineatus

Description:

The first two pictures are of the male hawk collecting lining for the nest he built. The last picture is the final result of his work in the spring when he finished the nest and the female was nearing egg laying time. The third picture is of one of them watching the nest from another tree, and fourth one is them next to each other right before they mated.

Notes:

The whole process of their nest building and baby raising is so amazing to watch! One of my favorite parts to watch happens after the female lays their eggs and is sitting on the nest. The male will bring her lunch by carrying his kill up to the tree beside their nesting tree and fly into another tree. Then she flies over to eat her lunch and he flies onto the nest to keep the eggs warm.
