Blue-legged Grasshopper

Metator pardalinus

Description:

Large, sleek grasshopper, 32-45 mm in body length, with "leopard spots" on front wings (tegmen). Hind tibia ("shins") blue. Inner surface of hind femur ("thigh") also blue. Antennae long. Hind wing varies in color from red to pink, orange, or yellow.

Habitat:

Found on sidewalk in my neighborhood, adjacent to a field that is essentially degraded shortgrass prairie.

Notes:

This is hardly ever an abundant species, and its distribution can be spotty. This is the first year (out of three spent here in Colorado Springs) that I have seen specimens of this species.
