Pileated Woodpecker

Dryocopus pileatus

Description:

Adult size: L 16.5", ws 29", wt 10oz. Longnecked broad-winged, long-tailed, w/prominent crest. Crow sized & largest woodpecker in USA.

Habitat:

Mature forests in east & far west of USA. 32771

Notes:

Bird was top of dead pine tree, so pic small, sorry. 2nd pic is from Sibley text. I will add better real pic when I get one. This is really an interesting bird due to it's size, red crest, large rectangular holes it makes to get at ants/bugs to eat. It's call is very unique also.
