The Virginia rail is a small secretive waterbird. This is only the second time I've been able to photograph them and I was able to capture the entire family over a 30-minute period. The adult sexes look alike (pic 3 mating) also note the long toes in pic 3 which are used to walk on floating vegetation. The chicks are solid black with black and white bills (pics 4-6). Both parents were foraging for insects to feed the chicks (pics 3-6).
Spotted at the Flaming Geyser State Park in Washington State. The park is situated along the Green River and has several large wetlands with standing water. The rails live next to the standing water where there are tall grasses and reeds.
