Black Rat Snake

Elaphe obsoleta

Description:

Approximately 4 feet long. As seen in the photo, in the middle of ecdysis (shedding of skin).

Habitat:

Damp woodland habitat. 50 yards away from the MKT trail, 2.0 mile marker. 25 yards away from the access trail that connects Katy Place Apartments with the MKT trail.

Notes:

When I approached for this photograph, the snake vibrated its tail against the leaf litter, which is a form of behavioral mimicry as it sounds similar to the rattle sound from a rattlesnake.
