The 10 species of the genus are from tropical Central and South America, but they are "frequently cultivated elsewhere and sometimes naturalizing in tropical regions".

Habitat:

Planted outside under a Norfolk pine tree (Araucaria heterophylla) in a large semi-urban yard/garden in the equatorial tropics of northern New Guinea.
