Eastern Tent Caterpillar

Malacosoma americanum

Description:

Caterpillar with a solid white line along its dorsal side. Sides of the body have blue, black, orange and white markings.

Habitat:

Spotted in crawling on a fallen tree in Peoples State Forest.

Notes:

This caterpillar is a pest species because it defoliates ornamental trees. However, damaged trees usually recover within several weeks.
