A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Sphecotheres vieilloti ashbyi
This is a male. Bare, red skin around the eye, contrasting against a black crown and yellow chin and throat extending down the body. It has a white under-tail area. Their back is brown-green and the bill is black. There are two distinct colour forms of the males of this species.
Lives in rainforests and wet sclerophyll forests, but is often found in urban parks and gardens, particularly those with figs and other fruit-producing trees. This one was spotted along the footpath near Rapid Creek.
My first reference for identification: The Michael Morcombe eGuide to Australian Birds, Mobile App. Second reference: http://birdlife.org.au/bird-profile/aust... Figbirds are part of a worldwide family that includes the orioles, of which Australia has two other members (the Yellow and Olive-backed Orioles).
