Wall lizard

Podarcis muralis

Description:

A common small lizard very versatile in colour and scale pattern. This one is mainly brown with yellow-greenish scales on the throat, belly and back.

Habitat:

Stonewalls, rocks, quarries. Its natural range is mainland Europe. Introduced in southern Britain and North America.

Notes:

This guy lost part of his tail. The tail of these lizards breaks very easily, allowing them to escape predators. A replacing tail will regrow but it will lack scales and will be uniformly grey. There are dozens of these lizards living in the walls and rocks behind my house.
