Polygonia c-album
The comma butterfly has a distinctive ragged edge. Orange with brown markings and a whitish/yellow fringe.
Europe and temperate Asia to Japan and south to Morocco. Similar species are found in the United States and Canada. Spotted here in an alpine meadow, 1400 m above sea level.
Like other anglewing butterflies this species survives the winter in the adult stage. Flower is Knautia arvensis, the field scabious.

Alice you were right about it being an anglewing butterfly. I went through the European anglewings and found it in the Nymphalidae: Polygonia c-album, the comma butterfly. I like how its name evokes its shape perfectly! Many thanks again for the lead.

I believe it is an anglewing Butterfly, but I am not sure your species is in my book.
