Eastern Hognose

Heterodon platirhinos

Description:

About 10 inches long.

Habitat:

Open area of a grassy yard, near a flower bed and house.

Notes:

Very small. It stayed still so long I thought it was a bungee cord and went to pick it up. Ran for the camera, came back, and only got a few shots before it moved off. ID by AshleyT.

Next time you see one (and are positive it isn't anything venomous!), feel free to pick it up! These guys rarely bite, I've never heard of a wild one biting someone. They usually play dead though! Very neat to see, they flatten out their necks and open their mouth up wide and stick out their tongue. They sometimes hiss too, but don't let that scare you off, they're just big bluffers!

Okay, that's the other one I thought it might be! Thanks! I wish I had gotten a better picture of his face.
