Cortinarius iodes
Cap is convex or broadly bell-shaped, slimy, smooth, and purple - becoming faded with tan spots developing, especially near the center. The flesh is white and firm. Gills are attached to the stem and are lilac when young, but turn brownish when mature. The stem measures up to 3 inches long, and is equal in width throughout except for a somewhat bulbous base.
Spotted in a deciduous forest at Sharon Audubon.
