The first character to look at to tell the two apart is how the cranial crests and paratoid gland meet. On fowler's the paratoid gland would be in contact with the cranial crest. On american, the paratoid gland either doesn't touch at all or only connects by a worm-like connection. This guy has the worm-like connection. The number of warts per dark spot isn't as good of a character to go off of :)
