Charaxes varanes
The butterfly from the Nymphalidae family has wings with orange and brown markings on the outside, and white on the inside. Eye spots can be seen on the underwings. It looked like a delicate flying autumn leaf...
I spotted this butterfly in the Jozani National Park, Zanzibar. Distribution: Africa from Saudi Arabia to South Africa.
I chased this guy for about 10 min trying to get more/better shots. Mid-day sun and harsh shadows didn't help.
You're very kind Ashish. There's more to come: I've been travelling for the past 3 weeks and I'll slowly start to upload new spottings.
True...
Its a collection of very much hard work and dedication to find true Taxanomy in Genus.. Salute them who do such great referral work and put on internet..!!
I just didn't want you to reference the link and be surprised to see a butterfly with much bolder colors.
Thanks 1Sarah2! Damage on the lower wing also shows that it wasn't born yesterday...
Could it be a Pearl emperor with some of its markings faded away?

OK I'll check those out auntnance. It's not that much the shape but rather the colour that made me think of a leaf...
I agree with "unusual" Alice. From a distance I didn't realize it was a butterfly. I hope KristenGilpin comes around!
