Large Whipsnake

Coluber Jugularis

Description:

up to 3m long, adult color black, not venomous but edgy and agressive when provoked

Notes:

Long thin and fast - this species is not venomous but delivers a painful bite nonetheless and an equally painful tail-whipping when provoked. This pair was found inside the city limits, mating next to our home in some tall dry grass. They were approximately 2 - 2.3m in length and fairly comfortable (!) with human (and feline) presence. The species is not endemic to Cyprus but was introduced to battle rat population as well as keep a check on poisonous snake species (coluber jugularis will attack and prey on poisonous snakes!). Not to be confused with coluber cypriensis - a smaller, much calmer endemic species.

Some days I can upload and some days not...well as long as some get displayed I am happy :) As for felines - what would you consider a feline problem? :) We have lots of stray cats here indeed. They have been raised on the island in great numbers from ancient times to help control mice and snake populations. This snake was introduced to do the same and it picks up slack from the increasingly lazy, well-fed cats! While being too large and strong for a cat to bully! Works out rather well for the cats. Until they get poisoned or ran over....which is how they usually die here...

thanks Farid - I do wish I had a better camera...they were beautiful snakes and very comfortable with being photographed. I have not been able to upload more than one photo and I have some close-ups. Anyone got any idea why the page is not loading properly?
