Pyramid ant

Dorymyrmex sp.

Description:

Medium-sized red ants. Nest structure quite distinct, as seen in the picture; looked like a little volcano crater. Not nearly as aggressive as the fire ants in the other two nests we "experimented" with. I am hoping someone can recognize the nest shape and help out with an ID!

Habitat:

Sandy playground. Full sun.

Notes:

My middle-schoolers "experimented" on 3 ant nests, to determine whether the ants preferred sugar or protein. Much to everyone's surprise (myself included), 3/3 chose the hotdog over the yummy jello. Hmm!
