Notched-mouth ground beetle

Dicaelus laevipennis

Description:

Fairly large (~20 mm), all-black, and semi-glossy as shown. Note wide thorax with hind corners overlapping elytra (wing-covers), a characteristic of the genus.

Habitat:

Found along margin of sandy trail through degraded shortgrass prairie of yucca, prickly-pear cacti, grasses, buckwheat, etc.
