yellow slime mold

Fuligo septica

Description:

yellow mass that crawls along dead forest floor material

Habitat:

temperate coastal rainforest

Notes:

I picked up one of the sticks it was on when found and put it on a fresh leaf. It started to move over onto it, but wasn't real happy about it. When I put that into a plastic bucket by the next morning it had retreated and started to sporulate (the black)

For some reason, commenter Clive's suggestions about keeping a slime mold alive has disappeared. Anyone, including him, have advice about keeping them going?

Thanks for the help, Clive. This was the first one I've found, and next time (if there is one!) I'll follow your procedure. The kids at school keep asking if it survived & were disappointed that it apparently did not. I took it as a challenge to get them excited about slime molds.
