eastern black walnut

Juglans nigra

Found statewide, Missouri is the world's leading producer of black walnuts. The species grows on a range of soils. Most of the old large trees have been felled for its prized timber. The trees provide an important food source for wildlife (leaves: luna and regal moths; nuts: squirrels and mice). Walnut trees produce juglone, a chemical that stunts or kills other plants growing nearby.

Growing along an urban nature trail (South Creek Greenway Trail) in Springfield, Missouri.
