Simena Luctifera
Ismael should delete the "butterfly" in the common name, since this one is actually a moth...
Sorry, Ismael, but I don't think so. This is a butterfly (beautiful, by the way), and my spot is a moth.
lgCostaNut puedes ver la oruga q esta en ese link q acabas de poner q es color rojo con blanco? crees q esta es una larva de simena luctifera? http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/789...
According to the antennae it must be the male of Simena luctifera, a geometrid moth. Geometridae, Ennominae.
Thank u so much IgCostaNut. I was looking for it on INBio website last week but i couldnot find it. Thanks again
I think this is a female. I did the I.D. from the INBio butterfly guide for Costa Rica. However, there are limited resources online. I do note that your spotting has one difference from all the online photos and the book...the upper wingtips have a white marking. This could be genetic variation or a difference among species.
Identifying this spotting (I believe it to be a moth) is proving difficult. My resources for Costa Rica are limited. Still working on it...
Thanks, Actually im not sure if it is a moth or a butterfly I`m trying to identify it
I have been searching. But have not found this one yet. Is it black with purple highlights or purple? (I'm assuming the apparently white areas really are white.)
Thank u Karen, I had been trying to take a photo of this butterfly for weeks but I couldn`t get close enough to take a good photo but last night I was on my room when suddenly this little one landed in my hand, I couldn`t believe how lucky I was.
