this is a vine plant. It has three leaves that come out of the stem every 10 or so inches. the seed pods look like string beans.
tropical dry forest in NW Costa Rica. this plant was growing roadside in partial shade.
It's native to southern Japan and China. I guess there's not the same natural control out of its native range. I should say, it's foolish to make a statement like I did, based on an online ID. For all I know, there could be a native vine which looks very similar. If it is, at least it's got lots of uses but clearly needs controlling, as it will be outcompeting a lot of native plants for light, water and nutrients, which in a country with Costa Rica's diversity would be especially terrible.
because it's a highly invasive alien species which is capable of swamping native vegetation like this: http://www.jjanthony.com/kudzu/
