Asteroid Caterpillar

Cucullia asteroides

Description:

Family: Noctuidae, Subfamily: Cuculliinae. Larva of Goldenrod Hooded Owlet Moth. Length: 51 mm (2 inches). Purplish/red. Feeding on small white aster flowers.

Habitat:

Found in small meadow that use to be yard 2 years ago. Abundant goldenrod, asters and other low plants and weeds.

Notes:

Spotted actively feeding on 11-9 and 11-11-13. All photos from 11-9. So fortunate to have found 14 asteroid caterpillars this fall in a variety colors including green, yellow, red, purple and purplish/red. Researching about asteroid caterpillars brought me to Project Noah 2 years ago.
