Great Blue Heron

Ardea herodias

Description:

Great blue heron spotted along the C&O Canal in Western Maryland. I believe it had a fish stuck in its throat because it would not fly away and kept trying to swallow. Made for great photos though since these guys are usually pretty quick to fly off.

Habitat:

C&O Canal is through the mountains of western Maryland next to the Potomac River. A lot of the canal still holds water from flowing water to stagnant ponds. This was within a stagnant water area.
