Tridacna maxima
Also known as Molluscs, Clams, Maxima Clam, Tridacna Clam, Tridacna Giant Clam, Common Giant Clam and Rugose Clam. Their mantle varies in color. They feed on plankton. Giant clam provide a vital service in coral reefs: they filter tons of sea water per day, and in doing so, keep their environment conducive for the growth and survival of other marine life.
Found between coral heads or in depressions. They occur in shallow waters, from 5 to 15m deep. Widespread in the Indo-Pacific region.
This particular clam appears to be a juvenile, although it measured about a meter long. It's very rare now to see giant clam in the wild in these parts. It's certainly a delight each time I see one underwater.
